Traditional Clog-Making Workshop & Dordrecht
Set amidst a typical Dutch landscape of vast meadows with grazing cattle, pollarded willows, windmills and charming
villages, we find Peter van den Dekker, the most playful clog maker in the western hemisphere. Here, we’ll
watch a clog-making demonstration. With plenty of humour and anecdotes, it’s certainly no dull affair.
‘It’s all in the attitude!’ Later in the day, our laughter muscles get a rest during a visit to the beautiful
Dordrecht. Amidst the historic farmhouses, the old ribbon-development streets and the standard-tree orchards, we visit an old
traditional clog-making workshop in Dussen. First of all, we’re welcomed with two cups of coffee or tea and
meringue cakes. Afterwards, you’ll see how Peter, the clog-maker, crafts clogs from a block of wood.
With clear explanations from the master craftsman himself, interspersed with the usual jokes and anecdotes, you’ll see how a clog
is made. You’ll also learn about the use of clogs in modern times. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy
coffee and a croquette at the clog-making workshop.
After lunch, you can have a quick look round the shop before we visit Dordrecht. The city is situated in
the Rhine-Meuse delta and is the most inland seaport in the Netherlands. The cityscape is dominated by the Grote or O.-L.-Vrouwekerk, one of the most important late-Gothic churches in the Netherlands.
But the remains of the city ramparts, the Catharijnenpoort, the Groothoofdspoort and the other
monuments.
